Upper Iowa University, also known as simply UIU, is a private institution of higher education with its residential campus located in Fayette, which is a city in Fayette County, in the US state of Iowa, with a population estimated at a number of approximately 1300 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Fayette gets its name from the Marquis de la Fayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War, and it is best known for the fact that it is the home of Upper Iowa University.
UIU was established in 1857, but its history started 3 years prior, when, in Elizabeth Alexander, a pioneer woman living near what is now Fayette, proposed that a college to be founded to her husband Robert, who donated $10,000 toward the cause. Samuel Robertson, their son-in-law, also contributed to the school's founding, donating $5,000 and 10 acres of land, which made possible for the school to open its doors to students on January 7, 1857.
Since its founding, Upper Iowa University has continuously grown, having today more than 6000 students enrolled in its various educational programs. UIU offers a wide variety of degree program, at both the graduate (more than 40), as well as the undergraduate levels (MPA, MBA, MHEA), also offering its students the option of mixing classroom and online courses.
The athletic teams from Upper Iowa University are known as the Peacocks, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, football, volleyball and golf. Their distinctive colors are blue and white.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable UIU alumni, there are: William V. Allen - United States Senator from Nebraska, 1893 – 1901, William A. Andres - CEO Dayton Hudson Corporation (Target Stores), Richard C. Clark - former United States Senator from Iowa, Carleton Magee - inventor of the parking meter, John Mott - leader of the Y.M.C.A. movement, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for his work with prisoners of war, and George Safford Parker - founder of the Parker Pen Company, among few others.
